CHARACTER DETAILS
Name: Jesse Fairfield
Canon: Original
Canon Point: 2022, shortly after being rescued from the Wraith by Felix, and bringing him back to the Hill Pack to recover
Age: 32
Heba or Tian? Tian. He aligns more closely with the traits of Tian, being intuitive and inwardly focused. He's got a lot of baggage that he likes to explore, to try to understand himself, and enjoys taking care of the people in his life that he cares for and loves.
Acquired Ability: Magic.
Personality Traits:
+ Compassionate: Jesse genuinely cares about other people and what they have going on, willing to listen to venting and provide a sounding board for other people. He is also willing to help others, one of the few things that will convince him to overcome his nonconfrontational nature and invest in a fight. He's protective of those weaker than him, and would go out of his way to try to rescue people, provide aid, and otherwise assist those in need.
+ Sensitive: Jesse is a very sensitive person, which means that he's easily hurt, but also means that he's quite sensitive to the needs of the people around him. He's quite good at reading people and working out what's going on with them, and this sensitivity can allow him to provide what others need in situations where they're struggling.
+ Emotionally Transparent: Jesse does not try much to hide what he's feeling. This is both because he's been in wolf form for so long that he's lost the habit, and partly just his nature. He wears his heart on his sleeve and very rarely tries to conceal what it is he's thinking or feeling. He can also be quite blunt because of his emotional transparency, speaking his mind quite freely and clearly, or making it known when his feelings are hurt or what his opinions are on things.
- Anxious: Jesse suffers from anxiety, which leaves him easily overwhelmed and averse to conflict in various forms. When his anxiety is triggered, he gets shaky, he overthinks things, he goes over what he's said or done repeatedly, he ruminates on people's reactions to him trying to work out what they think of him. Especially when combined with his sensitivity, this means he can get very in his head about interactions that would seem simple to other people, and catastrophize a lot about how things might go, both in missions and in interpersonal interactions.
- Nonconfrontational: After a lifetime of high conflict, Jesse has become particularly sensitive to conflict and fighting. He's not the type of person to enjoy battle, he doesn't like arguments, and will often shrink a little after clearly expressing his opinions, worried about how those opinions will affect his standing with the people around him. He doesn't like fighting and will avoid it if at all possible, preferring stealth or espionage to open battle, and will avoid holding a gun if he can.
- Unambitious: Jesse is not ambitious. Despite being groomed for a relatively high-profile position in his previous pack, he had no desire to follow through. He's never sought out a position of power in his new pack, and has no real ambitions to move up the ranks in any kind of way, choosing instead to drift from place to place, trying different things rather than specializing in any one thing and gaining notoriety for it. He doesn't seek out the spotlight and avoids having too much responsibility for anything.
History:
☽ Jesse comes from a world very similar to ours, but in which supernaturals were revealed to be real around the year 2000. Supernaturals were exposed when a string of attacks and murders in Central Park turned out to be a hungry and impulsive vampire. Because of the way they were exposed, supernaturals are generally subject to a lot of stigma from regular humans, particularly if they're the sort seen as "monsters" - werewolves, vampires, banshees, ghosts, etc. Since supernaturals were exposed, there has been the development of Hunters who track them down if they do any damage or even sometimes just because they're disliked. Even without Hunters, any supernatural who is exposed is subject to anything from shunning to vigilante "justice." The governments of the world are working on legislation around supernaturals; violence against them is still punishable in the same way that it is for humans.
☽ Jesse was born a werewolf in Vancouver, BC, Canada, to one of the larger packs in Downtown Vancouver. Born werewolves are relatively rare in his world. His pack were heavily embroiled in interpack conflict, fighting for territory and use of Stanley Park for their hunts and running space. Packs in large cities tend to have a lot of interpack conflict due to the lack of territory useful for wolves in large cities, so Jesse grew up in quite a violent, conflict-ridden space, and was taught from a young age how to be violent and not to trust anyone outside his pack.
☽ Growing up, Jesse was being groomed to be the next Enforcer of his pack, the person tasked with taking care of situations that other members of the pack might not be willing to do, such as murder of innocents or other questionable actions. He was not well-suited to this position, but he did the best he could to do what was asked of him. This culminated in him being convicted of armed assault when he was 18 years old, and serving several years in prison.
☽ After being released early from prison for good behaviour, Jesse decided to leave his pack, because he could no longer stomach the violence and conflict involved in being in a city pack. Without even going home, he simply transformed into a wolf and ran up the Trans-Canada Highway until he settled in Shiloh, a small fictional town near Cache Creek. Here, he traveled into the hills to live a solitary life, until he was taken in by the Hill Pack.
☽ The Hill Pack is a pack that generally avoids interpack conflict and spends most of their time as wolves, living far out in the hills around Shiloh. They are not overly coddling, but very sensitive to the needs of their people. Jesse fit in quite well with this pack, and had been in wolf form for several years straight by the time he was captured by the Wraith on a regular patrol, with only a few various transitions into human form. He's gotten used to being in wolf form.
☽ After being sent out on a random patrol, Jesse was kidnapped by the Wraith, a sector of Hunters that have enhanced themselves in various ways to be able to hunt supernaturals. He was taken to the hotel in town, where the Wraith were staying, and was being prepared to be transformed into a Wraith against his will and awaiting brainwashing by Sirens to aid the Wraith in hunting down other supernaturals. Before this could be done to him, however, he was rescued by Felix, a Wraith who had gone rogue after brainwashing failed on him, and taken back to the Hill Pack. Before she realized that Felix was helping Jesse, Snow, the Alpha of the Hill Pack, attacked him. Jesse convinced her to take Felix back to the Hill Pack's territory to recover from the attack. It is during that recovery time that Jesse would be taken to Annexed.
Canon Abilities/Skills:
☽ Control of the Wolf: Jesse is a born werewolf who is in complete control of the wolf. Because of this control, he very rarely loses his own personality while in wolf form. This is an entirely learned skill, so he may lose control in situations of high emotion or due to game effects, etc. He can also communicate with other werewolves (either human or wolf form) through a sort of telepathy. Unfortunately this is useless since he's not going to have canonmates.
☽ Wolf Senses: While in wolf form he has all the strengths and weaknesses of a regular wolf. Excellent dark-vision, speed, stamina, an amazing sense of smell and a mouth full of very sharp teeth. However, a distinct lack of opposable thumbs or to speak language out loud. While in human form, he has some limited access to the strengths of the wolf, particularly in situations where he's calm and connected with the wolf -or- moments of panic where he acts on instinct. The strengths he could access would be better-than-human reflexes, enhanced sense of smell, enhanced hearing, enhanced speed, and enhanced agility. The quality of these enhancements is variable, but would never reach the same levels in human form that he has in wolf form (for example, he will never have the wolf's full sense of smell in human form, but it would be better than a human's sense of smell).
☽ Partial Transformation: Jesse can transform through a range of forms from fully human to fully wolf, with several states in between. These include mostly human but with some wolf features such as a wolf ears or tail, and a humanoid form that is covered in hair with a wolflike head, that is much stronger than either his fully human or fully wolf form.
☽ Limited Healing: Limited healing when switching forms. When changing from a wolf to a human, he heals just a little. The healing would be essentially good enough to take him from the brink of death to stable but still severely wounded and incapable of taking care of himself.
Suitability: I'm already enjoying the game a lot with Harley and wanted a foil to her, a totally different type of character. I think Jesse would be great on stealth type missions and would be very enthusiastic about taking mini missions that were less fighting-oriented. I would also love to explore Jesse's personality in this setting, and see if he can get over his anxiety and aversion to conflict through the course of the game.
Inventory: A T-shirt and pair of jeans, socks, and boots.
CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?
Jesse's ideals on freedom have very much to do with being able to do his own thing, to do what he's suited to, and not to have decisions made for him. While he's used to being in a pack structure where he's told what to do, he would prefer every time for that structure to take into account what he's suited to, what jobs he'd be good at, rather than trying to force him into a role. That's the crux of his understanding of freedom - choosing his own role rather than being forced into someone else's mold. He's never really fought for that freedom, rather than fight the powers that be in his old pack, he gathered up his courage and ran away to somewhere that he could have his own version of freedom, another pack that gives him tasks suited to himself.
Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.
Probably the most formative moments in Jesse's past is when he ran away from his old pack and went to the interior, and the moment he joined his new pack, the Hill Pack. These happened around the same time. This was formative for him as it was a direct rebellion against what he'd been raised to be - the enforcer in training, the one to cross lines that he wasn't comfortable crossing. This defined who he is as a person in a lot of ways, primarily that he is someone who escapes bad situations rather than fighting back, that he wants to live his own life and not be pigeonholed into a role, that he values the wolf and wants to be in a place where he can be in wolf form more often than not. That he wants to be somewhere he is accepted.
Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?
Jesse's favourite person as of now is probably Snow, the Alpha of the Hill Pack, his new pack. He likes that she's calm and steady, that she provides safety and security for members of her pack through her stability and calm, that she is a sort of safe haven in his own anxiety-riddled life. He dislikes that she is very stuck in her ways at times, and he also dislikes her tendency to keep her pack far off in the hills and isolated from other packs - he'd prefer to have more social time with other packs and people.
What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?
When Jesse was younger, in his previous pack, his anxiety manifested through people-pleasing, he worked very hard to make himself likeable to others in order to gain their approval. This manifested by doing everything that others asked of him, something that his previous Alpha liked a lot about him, though that Alpha didn't realize exactly how much he was imposing on Jesse by taking advantage of that. Through the course of his time in training to be the next Enforcer, Jesse had to do things he didn't like, had to do things that still haunt him, and he realized after he was sent to prison that he couldn't live like that any longer. That he couldn't keep compromising his own sense of right and wrong just to please other people. And so he escaped, his biggest and most powerful act of rebellion. Throughout his journey from the coast to the interior and his time in the Hill Pack, he's come to a place where he talks out his anxieties, he declines tasks he doesn't feel capable of, and he adds his opinions on pack procedures and speaks up when he feels something is wrong, because he feels capable of doing that.
How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?
I would like to have Jesse work on his conflict-avoidance and be able to speak up for himself even more. Jesse is someone who's spent his whole life running away from things that are uncomfortable and against his principles, and I would really like to develop him into someone who's willing to fight for what he believes in, someone who will participate in missions and put himself out there because he believes in his own set of morals and principles. This will be a big step for him, because of his conflict-avoiding tendencies, but is definitely something I'd like to work on developing.
